A massive solar flare could be in the works as the scientific community (or just Discovery.com where I found this article) views a gigantic sunspot. The sunspot, AR 1476, is 60,000 miles across. Sunspots indicate magnetic activity, therefore it could be ejecting some serious solar flares our way. Monsterous X5 Solar Flare is Here

Considered a major solar flare event, the X5 was detected by satellites (not destroyed though). We were hit by an M-9 solar storm of radiation recently, but we are now headed into a new solar maximum in 2013.
