Pyramid mystery in New York City

I don’t want to wade too far in the deep end, but has anyone else wondered why these pyramids exist? Animal.com posted images of some sand structures in Rockaway at the Jacob Riis Beach parking lot. All the article says is that they:

stand as an “eerie” reminder to the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The site is also off limits. “I took a couple of shots before getting kicked out.”

I tried to find more about these online but could not. If anyone knows what the deal is with these please comment. I’m going to assume that it’s simply collected sand that was dumped with a backhoe and that’s why they formed exact pyramids. Unless someone else knows otherwise…
