In case you haven’t seen the film, here’s the whole thing summed in a couple of paragraphs:
In the film Gravity, Sandra Bullock plays an astronaut named Dr. Ryan Stone with a traumatic pain-body of losing her young daughter several years ago. She’s performing some maintenance on the Hubble telescope via the space shuttle Explorer with Matt Kowalski (played by George Clooney) when they are warned about a Russian missile blowing up a satellite and setting up a chain reaction of high speed debris heading in the same direction as their current orbit. As the debris screams towards them they scramble to try and get back in the shuttle, and as you already know, they don’t make it. She floats out into space and then Kowalski saves her and transports her to the International Space Station. They barely hang onto the ISS, so Kowalski sacrifices himself by letting go of his tether to Dr. Stone. She gets into the ISS and finds that there is not enough fuel to shoot over to a Chinese space station (Tiangong) where the only chance of making it to Earth resides in its Shenzhou reentry capsule. She shuts down the oxygen and effectively begins to commit suicide before hallucinating that Kowalski finds her and gives her a pep talk to get her head back in the game. Now remotivated, she figures out how to get over to the Shenzhou capsule, hops in, and screams towards Earth and crashes into a lake. After escaping the capsule she emerges on the shoreline of the lake with a new outlook on life.
That’s the official, surface level interpretation.
I watched this film after hearing so many rave reviews and found myself severely disappointed. With all of the publicity I expected a better film or plot twist. Don’t get me wrong, the film was ok, but in my opinion not “good.” It won 7 Academy Awards and had more nominations than any other film at the British Academy Film Awards. The obvious moral of the story was to keep plugging through traumatic events and stay positive, which is great, but it seemed like the film had more of an underlying message. So I watched it again with my paranoid tin foil cap on…
The first thing I noticed was the glaring resemblance of Dr. Stone in the ISS scene to a baby in the womb:
Could this be an occult reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey with the rebirth of man as the Star Child at the end of the film after he finds the Philosopher’s Stone? As other theorists like Jay Weidner have pointed out, there is much occult mystery in the film 2001 with the black monolith stone representing the occult chasing of the Philosopher’s Stone in the attempt to evolve into a new immortal transhumanistic form. Either Dr. Stone is dying and returning to her maker or she is being reborn with the umbilical cords all around her into this new version of herself.
There is also argument on the number 42 which appears throughout the film. Danny wears a shirt with it, Wendy swings the bat 42 times at Jack, and the Nazi Final Solution began in 1942. Wendy and Danny are also watching ‘Summer of ’42” on the television. Also, 2 x 3 x 7=42. And 42 is the “answer to everything” in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. That film has a scene with the Twin Towers (a feature of Saturn Worship). Is it a coincidence? Or some kind of occult knowledge held by Kubrick?
I’d also like to contribute the idea that 42 comes with a much deeper, esoteric-occult meaning with the gematria of the Kabbalah with the ancient Egyptian basis of the 42 Negative Confessions of Maat. From Wiki:
The doctrine of Maat is represented in the declarations to Rekhti-merti-f-ent-Maat and the 42 Negative Confessions listed in the Papyrus of Ani. The following are taken from public domain translations made by E. A. Wallis Budge in the early part of the 20th century; more recent translations may differ in the light of modern scholarship.
The reason we are supposed to see it in Gravity is because there is an ISS Expedition 42 scheduled for November 2014 (how comforting would that be to don that patch after watching this film?…).
The part where she begins to commit suicide seems to be a point of mental exhaustion and I contend that she might actually die right here. She hallucinates that Kowalski shows up to instruct her on how to get over to the Chinese capsule (and sip some vodka as well).
Notice the cosmonaut suit she has on with the 42 patch also has a name posted on it of “L. Demidov.” As it turns out, the name Demidov appears on Wiki as a wealthy Russian family (drawing theories of Illuminati-affiliation since there are influence and wealth involved):
The Demidov family (Russian: Деми́довы), also Demidoff, was an influential Russian merchant, industrialist and noble family, possibly second only to the Tsar himself in wealth during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The family still exists, and some descendants live in Finland.
The Demidov family was also members of the Russian Tradition of The Knights Hospitaller (the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem or Knights of Malta or Knights of Rhodes). Again, I have no expertise here but there are plenty of theorists who tie the Knights of Malta, Templar Knights, and Jesuits into the Illuminati so I find it odd that this name would show up on the uniform with the 42 patch.
The capsule that saves her (if you believe the official plot line) is the Chinese Shenzhou. The name Shenzhou literally means “Divine Vessel of God” or “Magic Boat”. Here we can reasonably tie this into the delivery of Dr. Stone to Earth as a divine aspect. In fact, in the film, you can see traces of evolution imagery with Dr. Stone arriving into a lake amidst the frogs and bugs:
Youtube theorist TheGroxt1 posted a video about this film and claims there are Egyptian symbols and Bible references that support a similar theory. He’s talking about a stone and the seed of the woman concept from Genesis 3:15 (or at least that’s how I’m interpreting it; I’ve emailed him to ask for clarification on the stone he references). In this passage there are people that believe it’s referring to Christ’s eventual arrival and defeat of Satan, and others that believe Eve has a child with the Devil (the serpent):
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
Some Christians believe that the serpent struck Christ’s heel with the nail that went through His feet on the cross. Some people believe this references Mary and the serpent procreating (the “forbidden fruit”) and starting the bloodline of Cain. This is referenced by Gnostics and the Kabbalah (here’s a link you can read through but it’s too ‘next level’ for me, I’m way too new to the subject to try and interpret it). Taking this even further, some say the Illuminati are part of this bloodline, even claiming that Cain is analogous to Cannibalism (Cain=Cannibal) and the blood of another person is the mark of the beast. Wikipedia has a post for ‘Serpent Seed’ that claims some white supremacists believe all Jewish people come from this tainted bloodline.
The Book of Revelations is also depicted in the film when the reentry vehicle burns up in the atmosphere. From Revelations 11:19-12:1:
Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a violent hailstorm. A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
So if any of this can tie in with Gravity, it’d be that a “stone” falling from the sky (Dr. Stone) in the ‘Divine Vessel of God’ is symbolic in this film of a rebirth of man. She comes from the lake as an evolved creature who traveled through the Philosopher’s Stone (like in 2001).
