Fake snow conspiracy theory debunking

There is a humorous conspiracy theory floating around that claims the snow hitting the Eastern half of the US is actually some kind of HAARP-bastardized-chemtrail-weather modification by-product. The claims are that you can grab some snow, hit it with a lighter, and watch it turn black without melting into liquid. There also accompanies a smell of plastic with it.

A lot of this stems from blogs like this one:

There is no doubt in many minds that there is some sort of geo-engineering going on across the Nation, and around the world. What we do not know, is the specifics behind it and what the purpose is.

We do know though, that the strongest military weapon a military could posses is one that can manipulate the weather at will.

People across the country have recently began posting videos and photo’s all over the internet of “burning” snow, that does not just melt away. Some people are even saying the snow has an odor to it that “smells like chemicals”, according to one man from the Jersey area.

As of right now, it is not known (by me) what is causing this. I live in New England, and the snow that has been here for about a week just reacts “normally” to a flame. I am not a scientist, and do not pretend to be.

Or uploaded Youtube videos like this (which seems to be the most ‘viral’ at the moment):

But if you dig into the research a bit, you can see that this is just one of nature’s tricks called ‘sublimation.’ The energy from the lighter (our heat source) could be enough to make the snow liquid, but it’s so cold that it skips straight to vapor. The smell of plastic is from the lighter’s butane.

Here’s the Weather Channel explaining it too:

And here’s the news debunking this specific conspiracy theory that is floating around:

So don’t panic about HAARP and the ‘fake snow’ conspiracies. Worry about the air pollution and zombie apocalypse…

  2. It constantly amazes me what some people will fall for, and I used to be one of those ‘some people.’
